    Book details

Jessie Sullivan has been married half her life, and has become accustomed to her role. But when she returns to the isolated island she grew up on to establish why her mother has been behaving oddly, she is to find a lot more than she came looking for. A loving, exuberant character, who believes herself to be happy, she has forgotten a hidden part of her spirit - the part represented by the beautiful, vibrant and legendary mermaid carved on a chair in the island's monastery. When Jessie falls passionately in love with a monk who is close to taking his final vows, she discovers a place in herself that she had never previously imagined could exist. THE MERMAID CHAIR is the story of a woman trying to save her outgrown life - the roles, identities, securities and illusions she had created for herself - before finally emerging as something far more alive and powerful.

The writing is soulful in its probing of the human heart and family secrets (San Francisco Chronicle)It's hard to put this book down for little things like sleeping and eating (Elle) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review Text

  • By Ms Molly on 6 August 2017

The book drifts into Mills and Boon land when exploring the central love story- i.e classic male / female beautiful people. I like the overall message and descriptions of the island.

  • By Jane Trueman on 4 May 2017

A very enjoyable and unusual book. It didn't effect me as deeply as The Secret Life of Bees but nevertheless, beautifully written and highly recommended.

  • By Jayne on 30 May 2017

Well written, unusual setting and individual interesting characters. Enjoyable, informative and entertaining.

  • By D.M. on 27 April 2017

Disappointing, having loved 'secret life of bees' and 'invention of wings' - clichéd and fluffy!

  • By hg on 18 March 2017

Quite enjoyed this - but she has written better books

I have no idea why this didn't appeal to me other than just not my thing. Too far fetched, a bid mad if you want my honest opinion. I did read it all, but when I finished it I felt it didn't really make me have any strong desire to read SMK's other novels and left me a bit confused.
