Book One in the Swansea Girls Trilogy by the Welsh Maeve Binchy, Catrin Collier. It is Saturday night and the Pier Ballroom in Swansea is the place to be: For Lily, an evacuee unclaimed by her family at the end of the war; for Judy, taught independence by her war widow mother; for Katie, the product of a marriage between a drunken, violent father and a cowed, beaten mother; and for the spoiled, wilful Helen. It is an evening that fuels jealousies and sows the seeds for friendships, confidences, and romance . . .

A powerful tale of survival and hardship, very well crafted and with strong characters all of which help to make this an engrossing story Publishing News Collier has a gift for bringing her characters to life. This book will keep the reader engrossed until the end Daily Mail

An entertaining and nostalgic tale set in Abertawe; very descriptive of life in South Wales in a provincial City with penetrating insights into some of the shibboleths surrounding the time.

  • By Annie Oakeley on 24 May 2017

Thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy but would like another book letting us know what happens when the babies grow up!

My wife, for whom we purchase these novels, is a fan of this author and would highly recommend, her novels.

This took me a while to get into. There are 4 main characters, and the author leaps from one to the other and at first I was not sure who was who. I think she tries to introduce all the characters too quickly. However, I stuck with it, and loved it and am now reading the second in the trilogy.
